Among the standout hotspots on Restaurant Row, Hide+Seek is a chic new American restaurant that recently made its debut in the bustling West Loop. Within the comfortable, laid-back atmosphere, guests will find a creative, tapas-style menu that fuses inspiration and flavors from Spain, France and Italy.
Hide+Seek’s shareable menu breaks down into four, delicately balanced categories: Garden, Land & Sea, Grand and Housemade Pasta, allowing diners the opportunity to try several items from each section.
Probably the least ‘garden-y’ dish from the Garden section, we just had to start with the Chive Buns. The golden-brown, warm rounds of bread heaven encourage an edible game of four square, inviting pads of cultured butter, crystals of smoked salt and mouth-puckering pickled radishes to play.
There is no playing around with Hide+Seek’s Hamachi Crudo, it is THE must-have dish on the Land & Sea list and possibly, the whole menu. The incredibly fresh fish takes a dip in a subtle pond of honeydew gazpacho and yuzu oil. Honestly, that is all this flavorful dish even needs but just in case you need a kick of spice, some Fresno chiles are there to wake up your senses.
The one thing we were disappointed by were the Grilled Oysters. What we assumed would be a pungent but tasteful preparation with Turkish urfa chile compound butter and parmesan, turned out to be a small plate of bivalves that were just way too salty to enjoy.
While we ventured around the rest of the menu, we did not get to the Grand Plates. We did, however, load up on more carbs and order the Campenelle pasta. A silky garlic cream blesses the elegantly ruffled cones of pasta along with an ode to the last of summer produce (corn and marinated tomatoes) and smoky bites of guanciale.
We finished the night off, as usual, with a sweet ending. Hide+Seek currently features a seasonal Peaches & Cream dessert made with bourbon-poached peaches, crémeux, house-made peach gelato, and biscuit crumble.
Hide+Seek is located in the always bustling West Loop at 838 W Randolph. They are open every day from 4pm to 12pm.
