Urban Market Chicago, located in River West in Chicago opened on Thursday, December 30, 2021.

The 40,000 square foot space is in the ground level of the Spoke Apartment building and located at 1001 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. It’s owned and operated by Christina Palivos and Maria Dernis.

They have dedicated counters for fresh fish, meat, deli items, bakery selections, a hot food bar, wine bar and a premium selection of liquor and spirits. They also have a juice bar, floral department, and a wide variety of locally grown and sourced products. In addition, they carry their own label of sparking wine. All their hot food is made-to-order and the menu was created by their own in-house chef. The store has also partnered with Caffe Umbria and serves their artisan coffee.

“After almost a year, we’re thrilled to be able to open our doors and welcome area residents and community members to our store. For the longest time we’ve been hearing how needed a grocery story was to the community and we’re glad to be the ones to fill this void,” said Palivos.

The store is also notable for its women-owned status. Urban Market uses biodegradable plastic bags. The store is open daily from 8am to 8pm with expanded hours soon to be announced.

“We’re offering what you’d get at Gene & Georgetti’s, Maple & Ash and Gibson’s here in Chicago, but out of a grocery store,” said Taylor Smith, Head Butcher. “If you were to get this steak in a restaurant, you’d be paying $80 for it, whereas with us, you’re paying $30 or $40. So you’re paying about half of what you’d spend when you’re out to eat.”

For their poultry, the store sources from Slagel Farms and Miller Farms in Illinois, carries Duroc breed pork and buys from a lot of local, organic vendors. All of the sausage is hand-pressed, hand linked in house and all of their sausage recipes are custom blended with recipes designed by Smith.

Parking is located on the southeast side of the store at the intersection of Morgan and Huron and the first 90 minutes are free with validation. It’s within walking distance from the Chicago Blue Line and Chicago Avenue (66) bus.
