Felix Modern American Dining is a quaint, mid-century restaurant located at the busy neighborhood intersection of Clark and Aldine Streets. Their kitchen is led by Executive Chef Derek Intapura, whose culinary talent can also be enjoyed at fellow Lakeview restaurants, BITES Asian Kitchen + Bar and Tso Good. At Felix, Intapura brings a fresh take to modern American dining, blending global flavors and influences with high-quality ingredients. Continue on for a peek at what we enjoyed during our recent weeknight visit.
We went for a spicy kick to start off the meal in Felix’s Aguachile, transporting our palates to an ocean-side restaurant in Mexico. Poached, jumbo prawns were nestled amongst a zesty garden of serrano and jalapeño slices, fresh lime, cilantro, and pickled red onion. Shatteringly crisp bites of chicharron provided added crunch while a sprinkling of cotija and wedges of avocado rounded out this south of the border-inspired starter.
We were also easily enticed by the Felix Flatbread, topped with beautifully caramelized onion, crumbly blue cheese, rosemary, balsamic and a scattering of sliced cremini and oyster mushrooms. While the fresh arugula was appreciated for some greenery, we found the bitterness unnecessary and mostly picked it off.
The luxurious Steak Oscar presented the best of both worlds: surf & turf! Once we spooned through the blanket of silky hollandaise, we found a perfectly-cooked 8oz filet mignon propping up a delicate lobster tail. Thin spears of asparagus added some much needed veg to the plate and balanced out the protein-heavy entree.
There were few dishes on the menu that sounded quite as comforting as the Roasted Leek & Green Pea Pasta. As the city embraced the Fall season and cooler temperatures seeped back in on the evening of our visit, this bowl of pasta was a cozy but simple amalgamation of chardonnay, butter, Parmigiano Reggiano and EVOO tossed with gently roasted leeks and fresh green peas. While the leeks and pasta were a touch below al dente, the flavors alone made it worth ordering again on a future visit.
It’s hard to say no to a warm brownie and ice cream on a chilly and rainy fall evening. While we certainly could have opted for the more seasonal Fuji Apple Hand Pies for dessert, we couldn’t resist the call of Felix’s Brownie Ala Mode. The rich, house-made double chocolate brownie arrived drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces, and lightly dusted with powdered sugar. For an added charge, we obviously said yes to a few scoops of Community Creamery's Trilli Vanilli vanilla ice cream on top.
Felix is located at 3301 N Clark St in Lakeview. They are open for dinner at 4pm on Monday, and Wednesday through Friday, with Happy Hour until 6pm. Brunch-goers can enjoy a late morning or early afternoon meal on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10am. Felix is closed on Tuesdays.
