As we enter into Spring (hopefully), March is quickly filling up with fun events! See below for dates to mark on your calendar as we approach Winter's finish line. 

Avli Celebrates Tsiknopempti: "Greek Fat Thursday"

Avli Taverna is celebrating the annual Greek tradition of Tsiknopempti, otherwise known as "Greek Fat Thursday," from Thursday, March 4 through Sunday, March 7 with a carryout and in-restaurant special offered at Avli Taverna in Lincoln Park, Avli River North and Avli Winnetka.

Tsiknopempti is part of the traditional celebrations of Apókries, the Greek Carnival season that centers around large amounts of grilled and roasted meats. The special feeds 4-6 people and features 6 Cut New Zealand Lamb Chops, 8 Pork Souvlakia, 8 Shredded Shoulder Lamb Keftedes, 4 Chicken Souvlakia, Greek Fires, and Pita with Tzatziki, Tirokafteri, and Garlic Aioli. Libations including Greek beer and cocktails are available as add-ons.

Lenten Dining Deals

Kinzie Chophouse

Options to consider for Lenten Friday seafood lunch or supper include: 

  • Fruit de Mer Platter – A selection of crab legs, oysters, salmon carpaccio and steamed jumbo shrimp, the platter is served with housemade mignonette, lemon-herb olive oil, soy sauce, and horseradish on the side.
  • House-smoked Salmon – Smoked in-house, it’s served with a spicy guacamole and sour cream. 
  • Crab Cakes – A classic steakhouse prep, Kinzie does their CC’s a little different. 4 mini crab cakes are served with a spicy wasabi mayo and pickled red onions.
  • Seafood Bisque – This soup can be ordered on its own or with the addition of a Crab Timbale served on top.
  • Oysters on the half shell and classic jumbo shrimp cocktail are always available.
  • Seafood entrees include Lobster Tail Risotto, House-Smoked Salmon Fettucine, Seafood Linguine, Pacific Halibut, Seared Salmon, and more!

All of these fresh fish and seafood dishes are available for dine-in and carryout. 

The Graystone Tavern

  • Available every Friday through Friday, April 2

Throughout the Lenten season, The Graystone Tavern in Wrigleyville will offer Fish Fridays featuring weekly Friday specials like Fish Tacos (beer battered cod filet, slaw, remoulade, flour tortilla; two for $10 or three for $14), a Fish Sandwich (beer battered cod filets, slaw, remoulade, brioche bun, served with fries; $12), and Fish and Chips (beer battered cod fillets, slaw, tartar sauce, served with fries; $14). 

Guests can order Fish Fridays for take out, delivery or in Graystone’s new winterized, heated beer garden. The space features string lights overhead, seven TVs, and customers can also play games like bags, giant Jenga and giant Connect 4.

Scratchboard Kitchen

Every Friday during Lent, Executive Chef Grace Goudie at Scratchboard Kitchen in Arlington Heights will offer a Friday Fish Fry featuring buttermilk fried cod. Each meal will be served with two seasonal sides and a dessert that will rotate weekly based on seasonality. Highlights include Farro Salad with dried cherries, butternut squash, arugula and balsamic vinaigrette, a Cacio e Pepe Creamy Barley, Roasted Beets with pistachio and herb pistou, Saffron Couscous with a mint and pomegranate relish, French Silk Tart, Earl Grey Creme Brulee, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Hummingbird Cake and more. 

The Rambler

The Rambler Kitchen + Tap in North Center invites Chicagoans to dine throughout the Lenten season with fish specialties available at lunch or dinner. Highlights include Fish and Chips with three pieces of North Atlantic Cod lightly battered and fried ($14), Blackened and Grilled Fish Tacos with white fish, mango habanero salsa and avocado cream ($4 each), and Fried Fish Tacos with fried cod, Southern-style slaw and sriracha ranch ($4 each). Kids options include Fish Sticks and Fries ($3) and Mac and Cheese ($3).

Chicago Women Restaurateurs Participate in Nationwide Dining Event on International Women’s Day

Let’s Talk is a business initiative - women restaurateurs who are battling jointly to survive this crisis. It is centered on dining and restaurants, and it is a women's story - one of collaboration, hope and battle, amidst doom.  Let’s Talk Women was started in July 2020 in Chicago with 15 members. It was created as a forum for women restaurateurs to talk to each other and share resources. It has evolved to these entrepreneurs undertaking joint initiatives and combining their voice for actions to save their businesses. It is founded and led by Rohini Dey, Ph.D., owner of Vermilion restaurant (Chicago), a former trustee and founder/chair of the James Beard Foundation Women's Leadership Program and former McKinsey & Co. consultant and World Bank economist. Let’s Talk has expanded to 350+ members across 12 cities including Washington DC, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Lexington, Louisville, Cincinnati, the Bay Area/San Francisco, Phoenix, Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle. 

The objective of Let's Talk is to increase visibility, funds and combine economic power for women restaurateurs through this crisis and beyond. To celebrate this momentum and women’s positive collaboration, Let’s Talk has announced its official nationwide debut event on International Women’s Day. Nearly 100 women restaurateurs across nine of its cities are hosting “Dine Together & Let’s Talk” on March 8, 2021. This evening features collaborative, multi-restaurant dining experiences for takeout by the women of Let’s Talk. These dinners span four to ten-course menus priced $45-$150 for order by March 4th, such as at www.exploretock.com/letstalkdi.... Guests are invited to Dine Together as one city and join in a Zoom conversation from 7-8pm with the Let’s Talk women. 

Expect discourse moderated by marquee names, including Congresswoman Marie Newman and bestselling author/TED speaker Angela Duckworth. Let’s Talk emphasizes parity is NOT solely a women’s cause. “Restaurants are the hardest hit sector,” says Dey. “And women entrepreneurs within this segment are hit hardest. Our restaurants are smaller in scale and often undercapitalized. Women shoulder the inevitable extra home workload, and they are isolated as business owners. Let’s Talk is not an organization, it is not an entity, or an association - from whom we women restaurateurs have received a deluge of webinars, guidelines and manuals - it is an action movement by us.”

KOVAL & Vosges Partner Up for International Women's Day Celebration

Chicago-based women-owned businesses KOVAL and Vosges Haut-Chocolat are partnering together for an International Women's Day virtual event on March 8th benefiting Sarah's Circle. 

The International Women's Day Celebration on March 8th at 6:30pm brings together KOVAL founder Dr. Sonat Birnecker Hart and Vosges founder Katrina Markoff for a conversation on female entrepreneurship. Learn about the journey these two visionaries have taken while enjoying a dedicated pairing of premium spirits and treats. Tickets for the virtual event are $10 and will go directly to Sarah's Circle, an organization serving women who are homeless or in need of a safe space. Gilda’s Club Chicago Hosts Virtual Untapped Event with Goose Island 

On Thursday, March 11 from 6-7pm, Gilda’s Club Chicago’s Associate Board is hosting “Untapped,” an annual event in partnership with Goose Island Brewing Co., taking place virtually for the first time. Proceeds from the event will benefit Gilda’s Club Chicago, where men, women and children whose lives have been impacted by cancer, as well as their families and friends, can feel they are part of a welcoming community of support through free programming. 

Event details:

  • Goose Island Executive Chef Henry Pariser and Head Brewer Jon Naghski have created a special menu and pairing for this virtual event to benefit Gilda’s Club Chicago. 
  • Jon will walk attendees through the menu and pairings and a Q&A session will follow the menu presentation. 
  • Each $100 package (for two people) consists of a three-course meal and three 32 oz growlers to compliment the food selections.
