Continuing Chef Charlie Trotter’s legacy, The Trotter Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has opened its scholarship applications for the 2021-2022 academic year, including a new James Beard award-winning Farmer Lee Jones scholarship for students pursuing a career in agriculture.

From now until May 15, individuals interested in the culinary arts, hospitality and
agriculture fields are encouraged to apply for one of several scholarships awarded through the nonprofit organization.

The 2021 academic scholarships include the following awards:

  • NEW for 2021: The Farmer Lee Jones Scholarship: This $10,000 award will be given to agricultural students attending any accredited college/university in the U.S. The Farmer Lee Jones scholarship is named for Farmer Lee Jones, a longtime friend of Chef Charlie Trotter and James Beard Award winner. One of the first farmers to receive a James Beard Award, Jones is committed to sustainable agricultural practices at his family’s 300-acre farm and is the founder of The Chef's Garden, through which he works with chefs all over the world to provide flavorful, high quality vegetables, microgreens, edible flowers and more.
  • Homaro Cantu Scholarship: This $10,000 award recognizes outstanding culinary arts/hospitality management students attending any accredited college/university in the U.S.
  • Pursuit of Excellence Scholarship: Valued at up to $10,000, this scholarship is given to incoming non-traditional students or current culinary arts/hospitality college students enrolled in an accredited college/university who demonstrate financial need.

"The addition of the Farmer Lee Jones Scholarship reflects the expansion of the Pillars of Excellence Program and our mission to address food access and provide educational opportunities. Over the years, we have awarded numerous scholarships to deserving students. We look forward to continuing our commitment to opening doors, creating pathways,” says LaKiesha P. Dunn, Pillars of Excellence program manager for The Trotter Project.
