The Fifty/50 Restaurant Group has partnered with The LEE Initiative, chef Edward Lee, and Maker’s Mark to transform West Town Bakery & Diner into Chicago’s Restaurant Workers Relief Center.

Beginning on Tuesday (March 31), West Town Bakery & Diner (1916 W Chicago Ave) will serve 250 free meals and essentials to restaurant industry workers in need from 4pm to 6:30pm every day of the week. West Town Bakery & Diner is taking over the Restaurant Workers Relief Center previously run out of Big Star.

At West Town Bakery & Diner, the meals and grocery bags with essentials will be offered on a first-come/first-serve basis, and will be limited to one per person. Everyone must show proper ID and have some identifying paperwork to prove recent employment at a restaurant - a paystub will suffice in most cases.

Also, The Fifty/50 sports bar (2047 W Division St) in Wicker Park will continue to serve 400+ meals to anyone in need (not just restaurant industry workers) from 4pm to 6:30pm every day except Mondays. No ID or paperwork of any kind is required when picking up meals at The Fifty/50.

Below is a joint statement from The Fifty/50 Restaurant Group co-founders Greg Mohr and Scott Weiner:

  • “We are honored and fortunate to partner with The LEE Initiative and chef Edward Lee to provide relief to restaurant workers across Chicago at West Town Bakery & Diner. We started providing meals last week to feed anyone in need at our sports bar The Fifty/50, and it's given us a very real perspective on how COVID-19 has decimated our industry. Our chefs are cooking hundreds of meals per day right now, and we're inspired by how dedicated and driven they are to provide great food to their fellow industry workers. Between The LEE Initiative at West Town Bakery & Diner, our food drive at The Fifty/50, and other projects we are involved with, we are humbled and grateful to provide almost a 1,000 meals a day to those suffering.”

The no-contact pick-ups of pre-packaged meals will be the same at both West Town Bakery & Diner and The Fifty/50. The menu was designed by and will be cooked by The Fifty/50 Restaurant Group chefs Chris Teixeira, Nate Henssler, Martin Arellano, Christo Vlahos, and others on their teams.

(Please note the Monday, April 6 meal is only available at West Town Bakery & Diner)

Strict social distancing guidelines will be in place at both West Town Bakery & Diner and The Fifty/50. Cones and stanchion markers will be spaced six feet apart, and all those picking up food should line up individually at each cone or stanchion marker. Staff will be on-site to organize and hand out meals, but anyone picking up a meal is not allowed entry into the restaurants.

Donations to The LEE Initiative at West Town Bakery & Diner are welcome and will help extend this service throughout the current public health crisis. All those donations should be directed to leeinitiative.org.
