Reporting notes: Shokran Restaurant Celebrates 18 Years of Moroccan Cuisine in Chicago

This spring, Shokran celebrates its 18th anniversary with a limited-time offering available throughout April and May: a combination of its signature Moroccan Chicken and a mini Chicken Bastilla for just $25. The 18th anniversary special invites both longtime regulars and first-time guests to experience Moroccan flavors.

Conveniently located near the convergence of Metra, CTA, and major expressways, Shokran (4027 W Irving Park Rd) offers authentic Moroccan cuisine in a sit-down setting. One of the city’s only two Moroccan restaurants (and its oldest), Shokran is BYOB and cash only.

Signature dishes include the sweet-savory Chicken Bastilla, spicy housemade Merguez Couscous, slow-braised Lamb Fez, and traditional Moroccan Chicken Tagine.

At the heart of the anniversary special is Chicken Bastilla, a traditional Moroccan dish typically reserved for weddings and special occasions. Prepared through a multi-step process, the dish layers slow-cooked chicken with aromatic spices, a savory herb-laced egg mixture, and roasted almonds blended with sugar, cinnamon, and orange blossom water - all wrapped in delicate phyllo dough, baked, and finished with powdered sugar and cinnamon.

Paired with Shokran’s signature Moroccan Chicken (saffron, olives, preserved lemon, and potato crisps), the anniversary combo offers an opportunity to experience both everyday comfort and celebratory tradition on one plate.
