Detroit-style pizza is making its debut at Robert’s Pizza & Dough Co. in Streeterville with a special partnership raising funds for a great cause. Robert Garvey teamed up with Billy Zureikat to launch a special version of the Detroit-style pie while raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“We’ve wanted to add a Detroit-style pizza to the menu for a while so we’re incredibly excited to be able to partner up with Billy for our first,” says Robert Garvey, founder of Robert’s Pizza & Dough Co. “It’s been a long time coming!”

The “Tripping Billy Pizza” ($29) features a shishito pepper cream sauce, corn, pickled jalapenos, mozzarella, cheddar, scallions, and roasted shishitos on Robert’s Detroit-style pizza crust. 50% of the proceeds of each Tripping Billy sold throughout the month of March will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, an organization that helps children and adults living with Muscular Dystrophy, ALS, and neuromuscular diseases.

The Tripping Billy is the first Detroit-style pizza that Robert’s Pizza will be offering. Beginning in April, the pizzeria will be offering a Detroit Pizza special every week on Tuesdays. Guests can expect Robert’s Pizza recipes along with a few new ones Robert is experimenting with in the kitchen.

Robert and Billy originally met back in 2020 during Robert’s Test Kitchen, a weekly series during the COVID-19 pandemic where a select few fans of Robert’s Pizza received the chance to join Robert Garvey for a Facebook live while trying one of his creative pies. Billy had the opportunity to try the Smoking Goose Meatery Pizza with duck prosciutto, Calabrian chiles, roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted mushrooms, mozzarella, and trillium (triple cream) cheese pizza. Since then, Billy and Robert have been waiting for a moment to work together. After reconnecting in 2022, Robert had already been working on a Detroit-style pizza dough recipe and it seemed like an opportunity to bring Billy in.

“If you’ve tried Robert’s dough before then you know it’s truly special,” says Billy Zureikat. “He and I decided to take it to another level with the true Tripping Billy experience by offering it to you in its original form.”

Billy began his pizza journey back in November 2021 when he kickstarted a fundraising project to raise money for muscular dystrophy. The “Tripping Billy” has made its way through many of Chicago’s pizzerias, but this is the first time it’s been paired with Robert’s pizza dough. Billy was diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy in March 2021 but began experiencing symptoms more than eight years ago. Since his diagnosis, Billy has immersed himself in cooking and savory baking, turning his newfound passion into a project that could make a difference. He’s raised over $37k for muscular dystrophy since beginning this journey and hopes that through his partnership with Robert’s Pizza, he’ll raise that number even higher.
