Meal Village, a start-up borne from love of family and fueled by the latest technology, offers meal packages for vulnerable Chicagoland seniors that are sheltered-in-place and living on their own. The program provides families and caregivers a reliable and safe means to ensure that their loved ones have access to fresh, nutrient-rich meals while COVID-19 distancing restrictions are in place. The affordably-priced packages contain fresh scratch-made meals that satisfy seniors’ dietary needs. The package includes a full dinner entrée, a “flipping” salad (such as a Baja salad or seven-layer salad with chicken) and home-made soup for lunch, a snack and a cookie – all packed with love and ready-to-eat or heat and eat. The menu changes daily and can be viewed here.

Meal Village Founder & CEO, Ravi Ayyalaraju, was inspired by his grandmother to channel his engineering, computer science and management degrees (Kellogg Graduate School of Management) into a career with a higher purpose.

“My grandmother would ask me, ‘how are you using all of your degrees to help people?’” says Ayyalaraju. “My family has always nurtured each other through homemade food prepared with love – we rallied around my grandmother in times of need to ensure she lived her 97 years to the fullest. It is my company’s mission to play a small and important role in enhancing the quality of life for our customers. In these trying times, it is more important than ever that we not only take care of ourselves, but also members of the ‘Villages’ that we inhabit.”

Meal Village has used innovation and technology to provide a local, high-touch support model and “last mile” delivery. Their packages provide a full days’ worth of fresh (never frozen) meals for $22 – a price that is purposefully below typical delivery services or meal kits. The food is brought to homes via no-contact delivery, and the preparers follow all safety guidelines put forth by the state during the pandemic.

The company has also set up a hot-line for seniors who need a friendly voice to guide them through the ordering process, meal preparation and more, and for family members looking for information and/or to check in on the status of deliveries. The hotline can be reached during the company’s regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
