Libertad, a restaurant that opened in Skokie in 2011, has begun service at a second location in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. Led by owner and operator Marcos Rivera, the restaurant serves Latin-American dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients and emphasizes shared dining. The new location is at 1835 W. North Ave., in the building that previously housed Las Palmas, Rivera’s first restaurant concept.
Rivera has worked in Chicago-area kitchens since 1985, including in his family’s Las Palmas restaurants. He opened Las Palmas in Wicker Park in 2001 and later launched Libertad in Skokie. He operates the new location with business partner Roberto Maso and his wife, Leonella Rivera.
The menu centers on shareable dishes. Items from the Skokie location include Veneras, prepared with pan-seared scallops, black rice, yuzu-habanero butter sauce, and yardlong beans, and Asada, prepared with grilled skirt steak, chipotle chèvre, yucca fries, and chimichurri. Additional dishes are exclusive to the Wicker Park location. The restaurant serves lunch, brunch, and dinner.
Chef Armando Gonzales leads the kitchen. He previously worked at Chicago restaurants including Mas and Amerikas. Ingredients are sourced from regional farms including Mick Klug Farms, Spence Farms, and Three Sisters Garden.
The beverage program was developed by mixologist Ziyad Asrar, formerly beverage director at La Sirena Clandestina and founder of Apologue Liqueurs. The cocktail list includes drinks made with tequila, mezcal, and mole bitters.
The restaurant occupies the former Las Palmas space and incorporates elements from the building’s past use, including a framed portrait of Frida Kahlo and murals from the Las Palmas era, including a Virgin Mary alcove painted by Chicago artist Laura Gomel. Exterior and patio murals were created with Chicago street artist Rahmaan Statik. The space includes a fireplace and a glass-enclosed atrium designed for year-round use.
