GORDAS Tortas – a new gourmet “torteria” is now open inside Kitchen United MIX at 205 W. Wacker Dr. in the Loop.

For those of you who may not know; a torta is a Mexican sandwich. It's a fluffy bun mostly on a Telera, spread with butter, refried beans, and filled in with anything you can imagine… Barbacoa, Carnitas, Cochinita Pibil, Carne Asada, etc. Garnish it with creamy avocado, jalapeños, cheese, veggies of your choosing, and of course salsa.

“Imagine that a sandwich and a taco got married and had a kid… Well, that kid would be named Torta” said the founder of GORDAS Tortas – Art Hidalgo. He added: “GORDAS Tortas is a “torteria” with a casual atmosphere and a unique concept. We offer our customers a variety of 7 traditional types of Mexican bread characteristic of popular states in Mexico and unique salsas.”

“We’re excited to welcome GORDAS Tortas to the Kitchen United MIX family. We love the variety of personalized options the restaurant offers which reinforces Kitchen United’s mantra to mix it up and make it your own. GORDAS Tortas is a fantastic addition to the already stellar line-up at our Loop location,” said Atul Sood, Chief Business Officer of Kitchen United.

GORDAS Tortas is expanding this concept by also preparing tortas with seven types of bread including telera bun, Cemita, pambazo, and other types of native Mexican bread. In addition, Gordas Tortas will offer an array of salsas including Habanero and Mango, Chipotle and Tamarindo, Chile Ancho, and Chocolate and new varieties that are still being created by the chefs at GORDAS Tortas.

The fillings also take the traditional torta to a higher level, as they include cochinita pibil, (slow-cooked pork), chicken, and two of its signature tortas: Pierna Enchilada & Tequila Lime Carne Asada.

You will be able to choose the bread, salsa, and filling, thus designing your own torta to your own tastes. Vegan diners have many options as well, including chilaquiles, nopales (cactus) Milanese, poblano and corn stew.
