With a deeply rooted connection to Italian culture and cuisine, Vincent Anzalone of Genuine Chicago and celebrated Chicago event planner Rachel De Marte, will produce the First Annual Marinarathon at Morgan Manufacturing on Sunday, November 15th.

The competition will determine which Chicago Italian Restaurant best balances authenticity with modernity in both flavor and approach. The winner will be named "The Boss of Sauce," as voted by guests and acclaimed judges.

With the list of participating restaurants growing, here are a few that have confirmed:

  • Formentos- West Loop's answer to Italian brought to you by the owners of Bristol and Balena
  • Rosebud Restaurant- An age old Chicago classic that provides guests with an authentic Italian experience
  • Dolce Italian- The newest Italian Restaurant coming to Chicago from New York City and located in the Godfrey Hotel
  • Coco Pazzo- Celebrating the Tuscan-inspired Italian dining experience with two locations downtown
  • Francesca's- One of Chicago's strongest Italian staples with over 33 locations in 4 states
  • Volare- Simple presentations this go-to spot in River North
  • Pelago- Chef Mauro Mafrici and his wife, Architect Kimberly Anguil have come together to make this Gold Coast spot special
  • Nando Milano Trattoria- Wicker Park's authentic Italian family who have brought original recipes to Chicago
  • Osteria Langhe- Wood tables and rustic bars fill this Logan Square Italian eatery
  • Tocco- Chic ristorante serving Neapolitan pizza & other Italian fare in Wicker Park

The event will pay homage to Chicago's rich history with a focus on the craft of Italian cuisine. In addition to showcasing their best red sauce, participating restaurants will also offer guests samples of some of their hand-selected favorite bites. Guests will also enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, limoncello, and Italian music.


The panel of well-versed Chicago foodies and writers will choose their favorite dish to determine the winner. Judges include:

  • Ari Bendersky- Author of "1000 Food & Art Styling Ideas," and freelance writer for New York Times, Associated Press, Saveur, RollingStone.com, Chicago Magazine, Health, Huffington Post, Crain's Chicago Business, Time Out Chicago, Michigan Avenue Magazine and many more publications
  • Sarah Freeman- Zagat Chicago Editor and founder of Sauced
  • JP Anderson- Editor-in-Cheif of Michigan Avenue Magazine
  • Brittney Payton- Host of Chicago's Best
  • Audarshia Townsend- Dining, Lifestyle, Cocktail Culture Writer for About Chicago Travel and Dining Chicago

Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the 100 Club of Chicago; which provides for families of first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

We can't wait to see old school restaurants such as Francesca's and Rosebud, versus new school restaurants like Formentos and Osteria Langhe, take each other on to see who's sauce is boss!
