Big Shoulders Coffee will host a Roasters Workshop along with a special Cupping Event and Closing Celebration for this year’s Specialty Coffee Expo, which takes place April 12-14. The Roasters Workshop will take place on April 11 at 6 p.m., and the Cupping Event and Closing Celebration will take place on April 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Both events will be hosted at Big Shoulders’ Roastery in Pilsen, which is located at 2415 W. 19th St.

The Roasters Workshop from Big Shoulders is part of a new monthly series, which pits guest roasters against each other to duke it out in the roasting ring and develop a small batch of coffee. The catch? The special guests have no information about the coffee they are about to roast. The goal is to demystify the roasting process, and to learn from the coffee artisans along the way on process, technique and to witness the steps they take to interpret an unknown coffee.

Big Shoulders has invited roasters from across the country to participate in the workshop. Invited roasters have ten minutes to interpret their coffee and roast it. After roasting, they are asked to cup and appraise the coffee after 48 hours. Following the April 11 workshop, the guest roasters will be invited back to Big Shoulders for a special cupping of their roasts, subsequent voting and an SCA Closing Celebration on April 14.

The Cupping Event offers the public and conference attendees insights from the roasters on flavor profiles, as well as an inside look at their flavor expectations before the cupping, in contrast to reality after the roasts have been cupped. Roasters will openly discuss their approach to the workshop, and offer insight on how to make coffee. The public is encouraged to participate in the cupping, tasting and voting for the winning roasts. Winning roasters are always invited back to compete at the following month’s challenge, and the highest scored roast recipe is sold via Big Shoulders' website. A portion of the proceeds of each coffee to come from the series of workshops will be donated to the Pilsen Food Pantry.

Guests on April 14 will also be offered light bites, drinks, and pour-over coffee throughout the event, courtesy of Big Shoulders Coffee and their friends, Cerapotta. Interested attendees for Big Shoulders’ Closing Celebration can RSVP via Eventbrite.
