aliveOne will celebrate its 30th anniversary this fall with a series of special events for longtime regulars and new fans alike. Since 1996, the bar has been a fixture at the corner of Halsted and Schubert.
To mark the milestone, aliveOne will host weekly ticket giveaways, a public Anniversary Week, and charitable initiatives benefiting All City Performing Arts and the family of the late Brad Price, a longtime aliveOne bartender. The festivities will culminate in a private 30th Anniversary Party on Friday, October 16.
Since opening in December 1996, aliveOne has carved out its place in Chicago’s nightlife and music scene. The bar takes its name from the 100-CD, all-live-music jukebox in its front room, Chicago’s only jukebox dedicated exclusively to live recordings.
Beyond the front bar, aliveOne’s back room has served as a stage for some of Chicago’s emerging bands, with live performances always offered without a cover charge, while weekends transform the space into a late-night dance party.
Music history is woven throughout the bar. aliveOne houses an extensive collection of commercially released live concert recordings on CD and analog tape, displayed throughout the space alongside photographs and music memorabilia spanning six decades.
“Music has always been at the heart of aliveOne,” said David Halpern, Managing Partner at Four Entertainment Group (4EG). “For 30 years, we’ve been a place to discover a band, hear an incredible live recording, dance with friends or simply grab a drink and enjoy the music. Reaching this milestone is really a celebration of everyone who has been part of aliveOne along the way, especially the incredible staff and guests who have helped shape the bar over the last three decades.”
That community has always extended beyond the people who walk through the doors. This year’s anniversary celebration will also honor the memory of longtime aliveOne bartender Brad Price, who recently passed away. Price first came to aliveOne as a regular before joining the team, where he worked from 2005 to 2015. An artist, carpenter and avid live music fan, he left a lasting mark on the bar, including creating aliveOne’s 15th anniversary poster, which still hangs on the wall. “No one embodied the spirit of aliveOne more than Brad,” said Halpern. “He started as a regular, became a longtime employee and ultimately became part of the family. Honoring him as we celebrate 30 years feels incredibly meaningful.”
Every Thursday from September 10 through October 15, aliveOne will host weekly ticket giveaways around 9 p.m to the private 30th Anniversary Party on Friday, October 16. Patrons will have the chance to win two sets of tickets each week, while $1 from every drink sold during the Thursday events will be donated to Price’s family to help cover medical expenses.
The celebration will continue during aliveOne’s 30th Anniversary Week, Saturday, October 10 through Friday, October 16. Throughout the week, guests are invited to stop in and enjoy a special anniversary cocktail while supporting All City Performing Art’s in Price’s honor. With a name that’s a nod to both aliveOne’s anniversary and love for music, Track 30 ($14) will feature Crown Royal, lemon, simple syrup, Pimm’s and ginger beer. For each anniversary cocktail sold, aliveOne will donate $1 to All City Performing Arts, which supports music education and performance opportunities for Chicago students, a fitting cause given aliveOne’s deep roots in the city’s music community.
The week will culminate in aliveOne’s private 30th Anniversary Party on Friday, October 16, featuring live music from longtime aliveOne favorite Omega Moos (with members of Umphrey’s McGee & The New Deal) with special guests Justin Canavan Organ Trio and DJ Boathouse. Tickets to the private event will not be available for purchase and can only be won through aliveOne’s Thursday anniversary giveaways.
