This Labor Day, Chicago’s hospitality community is prepared to welcome locals and visitors alike for a safe and memorable holiday weekend. Whether families are looking for ways to travel responsibly, or friends are looking for social distancing-friendly activities, the city’s hotels and restaurants offer numerous ways to enjoy Chicago’s vibrant dining scene, lush parks, and stunning lakefront.

Here’s a Windy City guide covering where to stay and where to dine over Labor Day weekend for every type of traveler:

Hotel Julian

Located close to Chicago’s Millennium Park, Hotel Julian through a partnership with Chicago Electric Boat Company, is offering a way to explore the city with its Summertime Chi Cruise Package. A private Chicago River cruise aboard environmentally-friendly electric boats, snacks, and to-go cocktails await guests who book this package. As part of Chicago Electric Boat Company’s safety restrictions, the maximum capacity is four adults per vessel with the allowance of two additional children aged 17 or under. 

Guests who are interested in experiencing Hotel Julian at a later date can purchase a $100 hotel bond, which is worth $150 towards a future booking at the hotel. Hotel Julian is also offering a $300 Future Stay Voucher for $200 or a $450 Future Stay Voucher for $300.

About Last Knife (ALK) – the steak bar adjacent to Hotel Julian’s lobby – offers dishes such as the restaurant’s Beef Wellington by the Slice. Indoor and patio dining is available for the summer along with several new menu items, including summer cocktails, CBD offerings, and to-go cocktails: Buck Wild with Cardamaro, ginger, lemon, and orange bitters; Boulevardier with bourbon, Campari, and vermouth, and Strawberry Dreams featuring bourbon, strawberry, lime, and Angostura Bitters. The restaurant is also introducing its Picnic in Chicago dining experience (serves two) starting at $75 per picnic. Diners can customize their picnics with several options for snacks and refreshments: a cheese and charcuterie plate, beef jerky, corned beef sandwich, veggie wrap, dessert for two, as well as beer, champagne, or an ALK cocktail to-go.

Hotel Lincoln 

Lincoln Park's Hotel Lincoln makes responsible travel easy this Labor Day weekend with its location off the beaten path near Chicago’s lakefront, Lincoln Park Zoo, and many trails, which guests can explore with the hotel’s complimentary bikes. Road trippers can catch a break with Hotel Lincoln’s Park for a Penny offer, which includes complimentary parking for one car per night. Burger are available on The Kennison’s patio, a neighborhood restaurant adjacent to Hotel Lincoln, along with cocktails and lake views from the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar – The J. Parker. For jet-setting canines, the royal treatment awaits at this pet-friendly hotel, including complimentary treats from a secret drawer at the front desk.

Warm wood millwork and jewel-toned velvet furnishings welcome guests of Sushi Suite 202, a speakeasy-style sushi bar and lounge located inside boutique Hotel Lincoln. The suite includes a six-seat cocktail bar, sushi bar, and lounge area where guests can experience a 17-course omakase dining experience ($125 for person) from Executive Chef Kin Wangchuk of Michelin-starred Masa and Cagen in New York City. The fish is sourced sustainably from all over the world. Hotel Lincoln’s partner, Sushi by Bou, also draws culinary inspiration from its “grow program” and local farmers markets, such as Green City Market, to educate people on where their food is coming from. Currently, they are growing fresh wasabi, shiso, shishitos, and kyuri (Japanese cucumbers) with non-GMO seeds sourced from Japan, California, and Oregon before the pandemic. Sushi Suite 202 is now open and accepting reservations through OpenTable. Max capacity is dependent on whether diners are from the same household.

The Godfrey Hotel Chicago 

Located in the city’s River North neighborhood, The Godfrey Hotel Chicago offers guest rooms and amenities for a relaxing, socially distant Labor Day retreat in Chicago. The hotel offers ‘The Longer You Stay, the More You Save’ featuring two-night and three-night discounts.

Guests will be offered a full weekend all without leaving the hotel, including private treatment at Spa Boutique or outdoor dining and lounging at the hotel’s two food and beverage outlets: I|O Godfrey offers guests a rooftop area overlooking the city, while Brunch Room features a patio section on the hotel’s first level. Guests will find bites and  beverages, including house crafted cocktails and mocktails with CBD infusion options, fresh salads and soups, sushi selections, off-the-grill dishes, desserts, and more.

LondonHouse Chicago 

LondonHouse Chicago synchronizes the classical architecture of 360 North Michigan Avenue with a modernist 22-story all glass tower addition forming a destination in Chicago, including 49 suites. Labor Day travelers will be offered the hotel’s tri-level rooftop bar offering a backdrop of Chicago’s skyline, landmarks, and river complemented with takes on American cuisine that utilize locally sourced, eco-friendly ingredients. Visitors can choose from packages including:

·        The Bed and Breakfast offer, which includes vouchers to Land and Lake, a full-service restaurant conveniently located on the first floor of LondonHouse currently opened at 25% capacity per city guidelines. 

·        The Spa Stay package features a guest room stay with views and $125 credit to LH Spa located on the hotel’s 4th floor. The Spa offers massages, facials, body treatments, manicures, pedicures, and more for the ultimate relaxation.

Lawry's The Prime Rib

While Lawry’s The Prime Rib offers prime rib dinners for takeout and for dining in-house, the Old World steakhouse is now also offering deals on the Lawry’s Meat Me At Home grilling kit. The grilling kit includes a few of Lawry’s signature steaks including two Certified Angus Beef 8 oz Filets ($60), two Certified Angus Beef 14 oz. Prime New York Strips ($65), or two bone-in 22 oz. Ribeye Steaks ($80). The kit also includes Lawry's Seasoned Salt and Pepper, two baked potatoes with butter, chive, sour cream and bacon, raw asparagus with herbed butter, and two signature spinning bowl salads. Guests are invited pair the grilling kit with an Old Fashioned Kit ($40) complete with a bottle of Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey, housemade bitters, orange slices, cherries, two glasses, and a muddler. The best deal you’ll get on an Old Fashioned kit in the city.

The Village of Rosemont

The Village of Rosemont is located just outside of Chicago near O'Hare and is home to numerous restaurants with many types of cuisine as well as a wide variety of entertainment destinations including Fashion Outlets of Chicago, Chicago Dogs baseball games at Impact Field, the Parkway Bank Park entertainment district.

Eat and Drink

  • Carlucci (6111 N River Rd)

The  Italian restaurant has a outdoor seating area for dining.

Signature items include the Polpo e Gamberi, a cold antipasti grilled marinated octopus and shrimp, Yukon potatoes, roasted bell peppers, green beans, and Mediterranean olives; or the Linguine con Prosciutto di Parma. Add a bowl of Fruitti di Mare, loaded with shrimp, scallops, mussels, calamari and fin fish, simmered in white wine with Campanelle pasta in a saffron tomato broth. Finish the evening with a Tiramisu or Cheesecake to share.

  • Kings Dining and Entertainment (5505 Park Pl)

Sip on beers in the Draft Room, nosh on some bites or chow down on a full dinner before taking it to the lanes to go for bowling. Billiards and shuffleboard are also available by the hour. 

  • Adobe Gilas (5455 Park Pl 2nd Floor)

Home to the 64oz Mug-A-Rita with live music and outdoor patio seating.

  • The Ashburn (5300 N River Rd)

Inspired by Chicago’s first airport, Ashburn Flying Field, The Ashburn is a restaurant that celebrates the heritage and tradition of aviation. The Ashburn’s offerings include twists and modern interpretations of classic American cuisine in a contemporary and relaxed gastropub setting.

  • Bub City (5441 Park Pl)

Bub City features Southern barbecue, whiskey and live music and is open seven days per week. Southern-style brunch and DIY Bloody Mary bar is offered on Sundays starting at 10 am. The menu is crafted by chef /partner Doug Psaltis, with highlights including "Meat & Three" entree special on Mondays, the original Giddy Up Fries and house-smoked meats like 18-Hour Natural Beef Brisket and BBQ Pork Ribs. Other signatures include Bub’s General Joe’s Fried Chicken and All-American Double Barrel Burgers.

The Lunchbox

The Lunchbox is offering a full Pasta Pie Basket special for Labor Day weekend. It’ll be available for preorder online up to six days in advance for pickup or delivery. Designed to feed 4 to 6 people, the following items come packaged together in a New England pie basket for $150 (before tax):

Celeste/DISCO 

The two are hosting a weekend Summer Music Series, featuring two shows on Saturday and Sunday, in DISCO (the 3rd floor) and the Celeste Rooftop Garden (4th floor). Tickets are $88 per person which includes 3 hours of open bar, live DJs and a picnic basket. "Oasis" and "Mayan Jungle" shows are at Celeste, "Tribute" and "Temple of DISCO" at DISCO. 

urbanbelly

urbanbelly is offering a special collaboration pop with Pretty Cool Ice Cream. Chef Bill Kim and Pretty Cool's creator Dana Cree collaborated on a Peanut Butter & Jelly bar ($6) reminiscent of Kim's popular soft-serve dessert. The bar is peanut butter ice cream in a raspberry shell infused with crunchy bread crumbs. Available for dine-in or takeout & delivery through Caviar and DoorDash. 

Funkenhausen

Order the just re-launched brunch menu & happy hour on the patio. Brunch is available Sunday from 11am-5pm and happy hour is from 5-6pm, featuring $5 bier boots and $8 raclette flatbreads. 

Robert Et Fils

The newest restaurant in North Center offers weekend takeout ($80 for two people). The Labor Day menu is available for pick-up Thursday through Saturday and features roasted chicken, housemade baguette, tarragon galette & more. Available to pre-order on TOCK.

BLVD Steakhouse

Order $1 oysters and discounted sparkling wine-by-the-glass all day Sunday during Labor Day weekend, at the newly rebranded West Loop steakhouse, open for social-distanced indoor dining. 

Mundano

For those who prefer to dine in the park, the Lincoln Park restaurant offering Picnic Kits, The picnic kits include focaccia with serrano pepper and everything-spice cream cheese, a variety of cheeses and meats with accouterments, pumpkin seed hummus, house pickles, olives and salty-sweet cookies. 

El Che Meat & Provisions 

El Che teams up with Vine Connections for Labor Day weekend to bring you "Asado at Home" - a two-course grill kit with wine pairings, featuring prawns for 1st course and Parrillada for the 2nd course. Both courses come with white and red pairings. Preorder for pick up on Sept. 4 or 5. 

Smyth + The Loyalist

While both West Loop restaurants are open for patio and indoor dining, they put together a special Labor Day Weekend Kit available on Tock for pre-order. The kit ($94) includes the cheeseburger kit for 4 to make at home, Smoked whitefish rillette and brown butter chips, Radishes with herb salt and truffle butter, Chicken liver mousse with the works (pickled things and Jeanette’s sourdough) and Basque cheesecake for dessert. 

Sophia Steak 

The new Wilmette restaurants offers Ready-To-Grill to-go steak kits. Order your favorite cut for the long weekend seasoned with a house blend and served with a side of steak sauce. The specials include:

  • Friday: Fresh Dover Sole ($62)- brown bytter, lemon, capers
  • Saturday: 16 oz Prime Rib ($52) – horseradish cream, au jus
  • Sunday: Fried Chicken ($26) – slaw, cornbread, German potato salad 

The Smith 

This River North brasserie offers Monday Happy Hour on the patio from 3-6pm. Try $8 slushies including the French 75 Slushie, $2 oysters and discounted draft beers, wine by the glass, and snacks. 

Recess 

The West Loop patio now offers Monday night movies with a 21-foot-tall screen. $13 admission includes your choice of a cocktail, beer or wine.

The Goddess and Grocer

The Goddess and Grocer celebrates Labor Day with its at-home Goddess Grill Box or Goddess Clucket Bucket. 

The Goddess Grill Box $60 box for two includes an appetizer, summer side or salad, two ready-to-grill entrees, and desserts. Or have it all done and order a Goddess Clucket Bucket $39.95 with eight pieces of fried chicken, two summer sides, chili-infused maple honey and brownies. Both with the option to add extra servings and our Goddess 4th of July Flag Cake.

HVAC Pub, the music-driven sports bar located steps from Wrigley Field, will be open throughout Labor Day weekend for several “socially distanced watch parties”. Guests will offered a Kentucky Derby watch party on Saturday, September 5 at 3 p.m. at Lincoln Park’s barbeque-centric sports bar with indoor and outdoor space for safe viewing. Packages will be available for 4 to 6 people ranging in price from $25 to $325 and include seating, reserved service for 3 hours, one welcome White Claw Hard Seltzer per person, house wells cocktails and domestic drafts, an appetizer and more. The Derby action will be broadcast indoors and on the convertible patio that is equipped with a pool table, giant Connect Four, giant Jenga and more. PARLAY AT JOY DISTRICT Labor Day Weekend Kentucky Derby Viewing at Parlay

  • Saturday, September 5 

Parlay at Joy District will host a Kentucky Derby watch party on Saturday, September 5 at 3 p.m. Per social distancing guidelines, only eight tables of six people will be available for the race. Guests can watch the race on a 25-foot projector wall and 25 TVs with sound on. Patrons are asked to wear masks upon entry and when using the restroom. Staff will be equipped with masks, and hand sanitizer will be placed throughout the venue. 

UVAE KITCHEN & WINE BAR Labor Day Weekend Picnic Baskets and Burger Kits To-Go at Uvae 

  • Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6 (CLOSED on Labor Day)
  • $7 to $75

Chicagoans heading outdoors for Labor Day weekend can order a Picnic Basket or Burger Kit To-Go from Uvae in Andersonville. For $50, Uvae’s Picnic Basket includes assorted cheese and charcuterie, French bread, deviled eggs, chili coated chickpeas, chocolate chunk cookies and a bottle of watermelon rosé sangria. Guests can add on a canned wine or sparkling split for $7 each.  Uvae’s $75 Burger Kit for 4 includes house ground short rib mash patties, red onion marmalade, lettuce, tomato, pickle, truffle aioli and brioche buns. Sides include grilled potato salad with black garlic vinaigrette, heirloom tomato salad and grilled peach snickers pie. A bottle of Pinot Noir, Cabernet or Rosé is also included.

WHIRLYBALL CHICAGO & NAPERVILLE WhirlyBall “Last Fling” Labor Day Weekend Special

WhirlyBall’s Chicago and Naperville locations will say goodbye to summer with a “Last Fling” package. For $20 per person, guests can order their choice of one hour of WhirlyBall, Bowling or LaserTag and unlimited pizza. WhirlyBall also offers a rotating craft beer selection with a focus on local breweries along with cocktails.

Dedicated to playing it safe, WhirlyBall has taken precautionary safety measures in line with CDC guidelines to protect guests and team members. Offering the highest standard of cleanliness, WhirlyBall, Bowling, LaserTag and common areas will be disinfected between each group, hand sanitizer will be readily available throughout the facility, and frequent handwashing protocols will be followed.  Common areas have been equipped with six-foot social distancing markers, and groups will enjoy increased privacy from others during play. WhirlyBall and LaserTag are both fully enclosed allowing one group at a time, and lane dividers and every other lane will be used for Bowling. Team members will receive a daily health check upon arriving to work and will wear a face mask at all times.

Southern Smoke Foundation Chicago Restaurant Workers Relief Fund

Chicago-based, 2020 James Beard Award semi-finalist and Executive Chef Brian Jupiter has partnered with Bulleit Frontier Whiskey this Labor Day to create cocktail recipes and food pairings to enjoy at a socially-distant BBQ with friends and family. Both are also teaming up as part of the Bulleit Frontier Fund to support the local bartending and hospitality community with a donation to the Southern Smoke Foundation Chicago Restaurant Workers Relief Fund.

Geja's Cafe

Geja’s Café, located at 340 W Armitage Ave in Lincoln Park, is offering a dipping and grilling weekend during the last days of summer with a special Geja’s Labor Day Grill Kit, available between Thursday, September 3 through Sunday, September 6. 

The Geja’s Café Labor Day Grill Kit serves four and includes eight kabobs, with choice of Beef Tenderloin, Chicken Breast, Gulf Shrimp or Veggie; along with a 2 lb. pan of Fingerling Potatoes; Cheese and Chocolate Fondue with dippers; a fruit salad; choice of three Geja’s Dipping Sauces; and Geja’s Grill Seasoning, for $80. If a smaller portion may suffice, Geja’s is also offering a smaller Labor Day Grill Kit with two servings, which includes four kabobs; a one-pound pan of Fingerling Potatoes; Cheese and Chocolate Fondue with dippers; a half quart of fruit salad; choice of three Geja’s dipping sauces; and Geja’s grill seasoning, for $40. Sauce options include Fresh Dill, Horseradish Chive, Thai Chili Garlic, Chimichurri, Teriyaki, Sriracha Aioli, Curry and their salad dressing Dijon Vinaigrette Salad Dressing. To complete the Labor Day meal, patrons may also add a Quart of Red or White Sangria with fruit, for an additional $25. Patrons are asked to place orders by Friday, September 4 at 4pm.

Offshore

Offshore is offering a full brunch spread with bottomless mimosa special and brunch menu beginning at Noon on Monday, September 7. 

Located at the east end of Navy Pier, the rooftop's bottomless mimosas deal is $29 per person for two hours. Patrons can order their cocktails and pair them with a brunch spread courtesy of Executive Chef Michael Shrader with a selection of brunch items to choose from including avocado toast, a spinach & sweetcorn omelet, a spicy tomato & chickpea jumble, and more all while taking in the views, safely.

In order to ensure the safety of guests, Offshore has aligned safety and sanitation standards with the current additional measures outlined by the City of Chicago. Reservations are available via OpenTable.  All guests will be asked to wear masks upon entry and exit.  

Mercadito

Mercadito, located at 108 W. Kinzie St., is offering Labor Day Brunch with a special menu available for dine-in Saturday, September 5 - Monday, September 7 between 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day. Each of Mercadito's Labor Day Brunch entrees are $12 including Carnitas Hash, which includes braised pork, crispy potatoes and a sunny side up egg, Torta de Huevo con Chorizo, featuring bolillo, chorizo, scrambled eggs and pickled onions, and Breakfast Tacos with mixed veggies, scrambled eggs and pico de gallo. Brunch lovers are also welcome to enjoy mimosas with $30 bottles of prosecco accompanied by complimentary orange juice. Mercadito is currently open for indoor dining, patio dining, takeout and delivery. Kennedy Rooftop

Kennedy Rooftop, one of Chicago's newest venues boasting the panoramic views of the city, will be offering guests a treat with the addition of new menu items and cocktails exclusively for the weekend. Chef Folkers has dreamt up a BBQ Spareribs dish made with housemade BBQ sauce and served alongside Tricolor Coleslaw, and an Apple Turnover served sweet with Vanilla ice cream and a berry compote. Mixologist Erika Delgado has created the "First Lady" in celebration of the holiday weekend, complete with Cucumber Mint Ketel One, Peach liqueur, ginger beer, fresh lemon, berries and mint. The rooftop will also be featuring an official derby cocktail featuring Woodford Reserve Bourbon, blackberry puree, mint syrup and fresh mint garnish. Those that wish to watch the Kentucky Derby in style can do so with the venue's large indoor and outdoor flat screen TVs.
