Al Fresco Dining Mediterranean

Named after the bohemian freethinkers of the '50s, Bonhomme Hospitality’s Beatnik On The River offers guests an exotic food and cocktails paired with views overlooking the South Branch of the Chicago River between Lake and Randolph streets add to the otherworldly journey.

On Thursday, June 11, Beatnik On The River reopens its 100-foot-long riverfront terrace filled with pillow-topped Indonesian daybeds, Moroccan lanterns and vintage Persian rugs. The tropical greenery in the pergola-topped space continued to grow wild throughout the last few months while the terrace was enclosed for the winter, creating natural green barriers between tables and guests. In addition, Beatnik On The River’s sidewalk cafe on Wacker Drive offers more seating, echoing the Marrakech-meets-Bali design of the riverfront terrace. While reservations are suggested, both spaces reserve tables for walk-ins.

The dinner menu features new seasonal dishes, including Watermelon Gazpacho with a sprinkling of feta, Tandoori Masala Meatballs, Hamachi Ceviche con Leche de Tigre, Huitlacoche Arepa filled with duck confit, and Sweet Potato Noodles with an herbaceous green curry sauce. Signature favorites remain, such as Smoked Baba Ghanoush, Octopus & Hummus, Charred Broccolini and Lebanese-Style Roasted Lamb.

Brunch, available Friday through Sunday, features closer-to-home dishes, ranging from Bulgogi Fried Rice and Shakshuka to a Double Cheeseburger and Fried Chicken & Waffles.

Cocktails include a number of signature favorites as well as a rotating selection of slushies and large-format drinks served in crystal pitchers.

The Beatnik team has been working diligently to create a welcoming, comfortable and, most importantly, safe environment. During the last month, the team has been redesigning the space in anticipation of new regulations, leaning even further into its design that was built for privacy with its abundance of daybeds filled with pillows and lush botanicals creating barriers between guests. All regulatory measures regarding sanitation are being strictly enforced, including social distancing postings and reminders, face masks, time limits, employee check-in protocols, employee hygiene and hand-washing and enhanced cleaning measures.

Beatnik on the River joins the original Beatnik West Town as the first Bonhomme Hospitality properties to reopen from the closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Plans are being made for Porto and more to open in the coming days and weeks, as well as on a new restaurant opening this June.

Reservations recommended via Resy; walk-ins accepted. June hours of operation: Tues.-Thur. 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Fri.-Sat. 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (brunch), 4 p.m.-10 p.m. (dinner); Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (brunch); closed Mondays.
