Settled just below Union Full Board, the basement lounge is playfully named Tinker to Evers after the famous Cubs poem written by Franklin Pierce Adams in 1910, which details former Chicago Cubs shortstop Joe Tinker, second baseman Johnny Evers and first baseman Frank Chance ruthlessly completing a double play. Seating about 40, guests can grab a seat at the walnut and brass bar or at one of the custom-made velvet tufted banquettes. In a subtle nod to the space’s namesake poem, the walls are decorated with artsy versions of Tinker, Evers and Chance’s original baseball cards.
THE DRINKS: The drink menu includes a wide range of local spirits, as well as 14 craft cocktails with playful names that offer subtle nods to baseball and all things Americana, including:
- Mr. Sunshine, an ode to former Chicago Cubs shortstop and first baseman Ernie Banks, which mixes together Bols Genever gin, Bigallet Thyme Liqueur, lemon and Angostura bitters.
- The Volstead Act, gets its name from the National Prohibition Act enacted from 1919-1920, is a riff on a traditional martini including botanical Escubac liqueur, Journeyman vodka, celery bitters and lime.
- Empress of Blues, named after singer Bessie Smith, which includes Yama Japanese Whiskey, Amontillado Sherry, Drambuie and lavender syrup, among others.
THE SNACKS: Chef Vince DiBattista creates a menu of bar snacks served until 1am, including an elevated take on a ball game classic with Bacon and Sea Salt “Cracker Jack” popcorn and Crispy Lemon & Rosemary Gremolata Chickpeas. A menu of small plates is also available until 12 am including Crispy Fried Tater Tots with freshly shaved garlic, thyme and basil aioli, and a Charcuterie Board with Bijou aged goat & Barely Buzzed Beehive cheeses, Creminelli garlic & wine sopressata and La Quercia Prosciutto, Valrhona-almond-fig & buckwheat honey, served with fresh bread.
